About Peggy Miller & Mudcloth & More
Peggy Miller is a fiber artist, quilter, and the founder of Mudcloth & More, LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based creative business celebrating the beauty, history, and versatility of African textiles.
Peggy has traveled throughout Africa, witnessing the unique textiles of different countries. Her love of fabric eventually led her to the distinctive handwoven and hand-dyed mud cloth of Mali, West Africa. Through Mudcloth & More, she transforms these traditional textiles into contemporary, functional pieces for the home and wardrobe.
Her work includes wraps, jackets, vests, pillows, throws, notebook covers, and other one-of-a-kind and limited pieces. Each design begins with the character of the cloth itself—its texture, markings, variations, and evidence of the artisan's hand.
Mudcloth & More honors the African artisans who create these remarkable textiles while giving the cloth a new expression through thoughtful contemporary design. Peggy's approach values natural materials, craftsmanship, individuality, and pieces made to be used, worn, and enjoyed.
Artist Statement
My work begins with the cloth.
I am drawn to African textiles, particularly traditional Malian mud cloth. The variations in weaving, dyeing, pattern, and texture reveal the human hand behind the fabric and are part of its beauty.
I combine these African textiles with contemporary design to create wearable pieces, art, and designer furnishings for the home.
I trust my work honors the original craftsmanship, highlighting its beauty.
Each finished piece carries both the gifts of the artisans who made the cloth and my own design as a fiber artist.
